We had a rare warm day on Haida Gwaii for this race. Overall it was a good day with fairly light competition. As we left Skidegate, there was one rabbit up ahead of a group of three of us that were running pretty strong. As we got to the half marathon turn around, the rabbit turned around and was looking like he was hurting. The two guys running with me kept going, as they were apparently in the full marathon. I wasn't feeling fantastic, but I felt better than the front-runner looked, so I: a) measured how far behind me was the next half marathoner, b) made sure to hold a pace fast enough that he shouldn't be able to catch me and c) wait for the person ahead of me to bonk. He fell faster than I was expecting and I passed him with a little over 5km to go. At that point, I just tried to hold my pace, though I inevitably sped up in the last couple km. The heat was pretty brutal coming through Skidegate on the exposed part of the course, and I definitely didn't feel very good after the finish, but I had earned my rest with the win!
